by Renjie Han, trainee at StudiebyEN from China

Renjie Han comes from the People’s Republic of China, and is a trainee at StudiebyEN through the student organization AIESEC. This is her own account of how it was to come from China to Trondheim and live with other students in one of the student villages.

renjie-1I like the feeling of having a brand new start, especially when it comes to the time of moving somewhere. Moving from one place to another is always frustrating, tiresome and sometimes a strong tear jerker if the «another» is too far away.

Two weeks ago, after traveling 24 hours from Asia to Scandinavia, I finally set my feet in this wonderful city, Trondheim. Though it has water going through you will not mistake it as a city in Netherlands. Though it has those hilly streets along the fjords you will neither mistake it as San Francisco. Sitting on the airport shuttle on my way to the city center I was surprised by those magnificent views of lights from the city. Trondheim appeared like a hidden gem among fjords with its distinctive glamour.

Steinan Studentby, one of the student villages, is where I settled down by the end of the night. If I was not told that Steinan is a student residence, I would have thought it was a luxurious residential area like the town houses at Victoria peak in Hong Kong, where you can get a fantastic view of the city. Obviously this is not only for the reasons above, but also because of living in a two-floor-room in a flat on your own. How can my tiredness and frustration from traveling not go away when I absorb the excitement of living here? I hope you are just as lucky as me and get a luxurious room like this.

renjie-2Two days ago, I decided to move from Steinan to Moholt where most of the international students live. The decision was made on such short notice that I chose to move all by myself. Yes, it was indeed the time for the somehow painful feelings of leaving one’s family and friends. Nevertheless, the excitement of discovering everything new is fascinating regardless of the bad side of leaving my old life. I am without doubt not a born traveler. Who doesn’t want to be protected and taken cared by family and friends he/she knows? In my case, it is a matter of attitude.

I have to admit I was rather exhausted after going back and forth from Steinan to Moholt three times with at least three huge bags in my hands each time. When I was done with moving at the end of the day I did feel like a big girl who is independent enough to accomplish her goals without help from men or her family. However, unexpected helps from strangers just at the right moment, especially friendly bus drivers and polite Norwegian guys, made me feel that the city is even lovelier to live in.

More international exposure is the reason why I choose to move in Moholt and it is definitely a right choice. Norwegian, Zimbabwean, Lithuanian and Chinese living in the same flat, what a great mix! Now I’m going to enjoy the rest of the evening with my new flat mates, probably cups of warm tea, snows outside, and of course more chatting.

At last, for other new comers, do remember to find your best way of living happily ever after in Trondheim until you decide to end your adventure.
